Our 10th grade Biology class took a field trip to the Schor Conservation Area in Canaan, which is managed by the Columbia Land Conservancy. They met Patrick Knapp (director of public lands), Heidi Bock (vice president of conservation) and Jennifer Rosete (conservation education manager) for a tour of a 7-acre deer exclosure, learned about the CLC’s forestry management decisions, pulled invasive species from the pond, and got to do some Kayaking! Deer exclosures are fenced-in areas designed to keep white-tailed deer out, which CLC uses to study forest regeneration and protect young native plants from overbrowsing. This school year, Chatham High School’s science teachers and student Global Research Team installed a deer exclosure on our campus, which the students have been using as a research experience.
