Planning for Chatham Central School District's Future
The Chatham Central School District (CCSD) is developing a comprehensive, long-term strategic plan focused on facilities, enrollment management, and financial sustainability. The District is facing significant, sustained challenges due to a decreasing student enrollment trend coupled with increasing operational and building maintenance costs, placing substantial pressure on the District's budget and resources. The primary objective of this engagement is to develop a data-driven, actionable, and community-supported plan for the optimal configuration and utilization of District facilities to ensure the delivery of high-quality education in a fiscally responsible manner for the next 10-15 years.
In May, 2026, the Board of Education hired consultant firm Zeal Education Group to work with the District and our community to evaluate how our declining student enrollment will impact the District’s long-term operational needs, use of our facilities, and costs.
In October, 2026, the District formed the Future Planning Committee, which will play an important advisory role in evaluating how our declining student enrollment may impact the District’ and explore and prioritize several possible scenarios - from maintaining the current school building footprint to consolidating programs or repurposing space.
This is the beginning of a multi-year conversation and no immediate decisions have been made.
