Chatham High School students and staff rolled up their sleeves for a courtyard work day after school last week. They began removing stumps, laying down a weed barrier, and hauling in pea stone as the first steps in making the building’s courtyard an inviting, safe, and functional outdoor space for everyone to enjoy.
Last year, CHS staff formed the Courtyard Committee to help reimagine the building’s long-unused courtyard. They turned to their students for inspiration and selected Senior Cassandra Michalek’s design to guide the new layout of the space.
Thanks to the generosity of local partners from our community, that vision is now becoming a reality. Herrington’s in Chatham donated lumber that our Residential Construction class used to build custom octagon tables along with four Adirondack chairs and garden boxes for the space.
Carlton Matthews (Class of '76) generously provided a $1,000 donation to fund essential groundwork supplies, including the weed barriers, pea stone, and pavers.
We are grateful for the support from our students, staff, local businesses, and alumni. With so many eager hands ready to help, we look forward to sharing more progress with you soon!
