Each year, Chatham Middle School’s counseling department partners with National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) trainers Ira Baumgartner and Tawana Davis to provide leadership training to 8th grade student leaders. NCBI training focuses on students understanding the impact of self-awareness, personal identities, and stereotypes, as well as provides them with effective ways to create a more caring environment in their school. With their training complete, these student leaders will present positive relationship-building workshops for all sixth graders with the aim of reducing prejudice, conflict, and bullying. Over 20 school districts participate in a consortium with NCBI, with CMS being one of its longest-standing participants.
