Albany Med Health System’s Injury Prevention & Outreach team visited Chatham High School September 26 to present the nationally renowned Impact Teen Drivers program, titled “What Do You Consider Lethal?” during an assembly for all CHS students. Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens in the United States. Many of these tragedies, in upwards of 75% of all fatal crashes, do not involve alcohol or drugs, but stem instead from inexperience, distracted driving (such as texting), speeding, and other risky decision making behind the wheel. This program confronted these issues with real-life stories from individuals directly impacted by distracted driving crashes, videos that allowed students to experience the consequences of distracted driving, a group discussion that encouraged responsible decision-making, and a student pledge to commit to safe driving habits.
