During Music in the Park on June 11, Chatham Central School District was proud to dedicate our music suite at Chatham High Schools in honor of Muriel Faxon. A fixture in the Chatham community, Ms. Faxon has volunteered countless hours for our school and students. She has served on Chatham’s Board of Education school for over 25 years in total and has chaired our facilities committee, led our negotiations committee, and represented the Board on the Chatham Public Library Advisory Committee. A true leader, she has inspired and taught countless school board members what it means to be a dedicated school advocate.
Anyone who knows Ms. Faxon knows that she has a love for music, dance, theater, and the arts.
She brought this passion to Chatham CSD and has been a champion and advocate for the arts in school. She has owned and operated The Muriel Scott Faxon School of Dance here in Chatham since the early 1950’s.Through her leadership she inspired, taught, and helped children find a love for music and the arts.
“Thank you Muriel for your support, dedication, and years of service to this district,” said Andrew Kourt, Chatham’s superintendent of schools, during his remarks at the dedication. “You have made Chatham a better place and for that this community will be forever grateful.”
The District had a plaque made to commemorate the dedication, which reads:
Chatham Music Suite Dedication - Muriel Scott Faxon
June 11, 2025
This music suite is dedicated with love and gratitude to Muriel Scott Faxon for her lifetime of service to the students of the Chatham Central School District.
A prominent music, art and theatre advocate, Muriel Faxon’s leadership on the Board of Education and at the Public Library brought opportunity and enrichment to the students across the District and the greater community.
Muriel laid the cornerstone for the Chatham Arts Community upon which this suite is built. Her legacy is heard in the melodies that continue to harmonize in these halls for generations of Panthers past, present, and future.
Ms. Faxon will be retiring as a Board member at the end of this school year. Chatham High School is currently undergoing a three-year renovation that will include our band and choir classrooms and the back entrance way to the stage. As we undergo these renovations, we want current and future students to know the forever impact Ms. Faxon has made on the Chatham Central School District and our music and art programs.
