High school students in small-group book circle discussion

This year, independent reading book circles have English 9 students delving deeply into literature together, thanks to a collaboration between CHS librarian Donna Eager and English teacher Lauren Montgomery. The students are currently reading The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. Biweekly, they come to class prepared for a book circle discussion, where they meet in both small-group and whole-class settings to share their thoughts on what they are reading. Each group has an assigned leader for the week, while other students are assigned the task of preparing either an illustration of a favorite scene, a quote for understanding the novel's theme, or discussion points about an important character. As Ms. Montgomery remarked, “The students are doing a great job so far!”
