Students in Chatham High School’s Life Skills class put a new spin on hands-on learning thanks to a grant-funded educational technology initiative led by Stephanie Carbone, our director of student support services. This exciting addition is the LEGO® Education program, which gives students the opportunity to build, create, and collaborate through project-based learning.
Recently, the students followed a series of directions to build a carousel for an amusement park using LEGOs. After constructing their models, they programmed the carousels using block coding on their Chromebooks and connected the devices via Bluetooth to make the rides spin. The teams had fun changing the speed of the ride as well as adding sound effects to customize their creation.
Throughout the school year, students will use these specialized LEGO kits to explore themes across science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The program focuses on developing key skills in creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and block coding by helping students apply STEM concepts in a fun, meaningful, real-world way.
