students doing story walk set up at tennis courts

CMS’ character theme for the month of May is 'resilience.' On May 20, the entire 7th-grade class visited MED to lead our 3rd graders through a story walk and read picture books about resilience and personal growth together. The story walk and selected picture books were organized by our school librarian, Donna Eager. Both the middle and elementary school students were greatly involved and engaged with the books and with one another.

At the start of the month, 7th grade students read the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, in which the two main characters exemplify character traits that encourage readers to have stamina and be resilient in the face of challenges both large and small. The students then wrote five-paragraph formal research essays on the science of resilience and a person in society who they feel is an exemplary model of positive resilience.
