Mrs. DiIorio and Mr. Dorato led their Consumer Math students on an unconventional yet highly practical field trip: the school parking lot. The focus of this hands-on learning experience was all about vehicle awareness and responsibility.

Students started with the task of locating and understanding inspection and registration expiration dates. This exercise aimed to instill the importance of staying legally compliant and avoiding potential fines.

The class then turned its attention to tire pressure. Students discovered how to find the manufacturer's recommended pressure both on the vehicle's door jamb and directly on the tire itself, highlighting the significance of proper inflation for safety and fuel efficiency.

Students then inspected Mrs. DiIorio's car for Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) tags on the passenger doors, hood and various other parts. This exercise served a dual purpose: teaching students how to identify original versus replacement parts and humorously investigating Mrs. DiIorio's claim of "a deer hit me" incident.

The learning then became personalized as students who drove themselves to school took the lead, guiding their peers in applying the same inspection techniques to their own vehicles.  Students conducted quick inspections of their vehicles to ensure all blinkers and lights were in proper working order, emphasizing the importance of visibility on the road.

The lesson also covered an essential aspect of responsible vehicle ownership – having readily available documentation. Students diligently checked their own cars to confirm the presence of current registration and insurance cards.

Finally, in a display of community-mindedness, the students took on the role of helpful informants. They checked the inspection and registration stickers of all the cars in the parking lot, intending to discreetly alert friends and staff who might be unaware of any expirations.

This innovative field trip provided students with valuable real-world knowledge, transforming the school parking lot into an engaging and practical learning environment.
