October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and as part of our ongoing commitment to character education and student wellness, “The World’s #1 Youth Leadership Team” returned to Chatham with HOPE (Hold On, Possibilities Exist). On October 14, Sweethearts & Heroes were at CMS to help prevent hopelessness, bullying and suicide by providing dynamic, inspiring content that centered on the human interaction skills such as empathy, compassion and teamwork.
During a morning presentation for all CMS students, co-founder Thom Murphy inspired students to take action when they witness bullying and introduced the students to one of his heroes, retired U.S. Army Sgt. Rick Yarosh, who was severely burned while serving in Iraq when a roadside bomb destroyed the vehicle he was riding in. Yarosh recounted his journey from hopelessness to thriving, and how the kind words of a stranger were the turning point for him
After the assembly, Murphy and Yarosh spent the remainder of the day leading circle activities with students in smaller groups to build compassion and empathy together. Sweethearts & Heroes last visited Chatham in 2022.
