students looking at gingerbread houses in Winter Park

As part of a descriptive writing unit in sixth grade ELA classes, students wrote real estate listings for gingerbread houses for sale in the fictional town of Winter Park, North Pole. Then they actually built gingerbread houses and displayed their writing pieces in a mock "open house." Students traveled around Winter Park to choose which house they wanted to buy in preparation for their next unit: writing claims, providing evidence about why they want to buy the gingerbread house, and giving justification for their choices.
