Sonam Verma, daughter of Daljeet Singh and Ranjana Kumari of Chatham, has been named Chatham High School’s Class of 2021 Salutatorian. Sonam’s high school career has included being a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Business and Marketing Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Model Congress, and Yellow Ribbon. Along with these engagements she is also the founder of Chatham’s first Med Club, and the president of Student Government and Class of 2021. She has received numerous recognitions for multiple classes which include the Student of the Quarter Awards, Certificates of Excellence, Highest Average, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal Award, and the Gellert Cornell Admissions Invitation. Throughout high school, Sonam enjoyed playing on the varsity girl’s tennis team, which she had the opportunity to be a co-captain of during her Junior year. Along with tennis, volunteering is a large part of her life and she has volunteered at local blood drives, Sean’s Run, St. Baldrick’s, and has independently taken the initiative to create hats for infants in need. In this COVID pandemic, she has continued to help people by making masks for her community, sending E-Cards for senior citizens living in nursing homes, and painting postcards with messages for veterans in nursing homes. She has always represented Chatham at various events such as AIC Model Congress, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), varsity tennis matches, and now as the Class of 2021 Salutatorian. In the fall, Sonam will be attending Stony Brook University to study biology.
