Columbia County DOH Requirements for High-risk Sports

(January 29, 2021)

Dear CMS and CHS families,

Recently, the NYS Department of Health announced that high-risk sports (as deemed by NYS) may begin in February, pending the approval of local county departments of health. I wanted to share with you the Columbia County Department of Health’s requirements that must be met for high-risk interscholastic sports to take place here. Most importantly, the County’s seven-day-rolling-average positivity rate must drop to 4% or below. As of today, the County’s average is 6.8%, so high-risk sports are not cleared to begin at this time. Two other important metrics are the available hospital capacity in our area, which must stay above 15%, and the continuing absence of other emerging factors that might impact COVID-19 control or mitigation, such as new, highly contagious strains of the virus.

For your information, I have included a link to the letter I received today from Department of Health Director Jack Mabb, which will provide you with additional detail.

Sincerely,

Sal DeAngelo
Superintendent of Schools
