Acceptable Masks/Face Coverings for School

(October 2, 2020)

Dear Chatham Families,

We are really looking forward to students being back on campus and following a set schedule next week. We wanted to take this time to clarify what types of masks/face coverings are acceptable for students to wear. These guidelines were developed in consultation with the Columbia County Department of Health and apply both at school and on the bus.

Approved face coverings include both cloth (home sewn or store bought) and surgical/medical style masks that fully cover the mouth and nose, fit snugly to the face, and are closed at the bottom.

Masks with valves/vents, neck gaiters/buffs, and bandanas tied around the face will not be allowed to be worn, due to concerns about their effectiveness. A face shield worn by itself is also not an acceptable face covering. For the safety of everyone, students who come to school wearing a face covering that is not acceptable will be provided with an appropriate face covering to wear. Our schools also have face coverings available for any families who request them.

Concerning outdoor interschool athletics, the guidelines allow athletes to wear face coverings of their choosing, including gaiters, during practices and games. We are requiring that athletes wear only school-approved face coverings while on the bus.

To learn more about choosing a mask/face covering that best protects you and others, check out the following resources provided by the CDC has provided at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html

Thank you for your attention to this matter. The health and safety of our students, staff, and community is our priority.

Sincerely,

Sal DeAngelo
Superintendent of Schools
