June 1, 2020
Updated June 8, 2020 – The Governor has issued an Executive Order extending the deadline for school districts to receive school absentee budget ballots by mail. According to the Order, school districts can accept absentee ballots by hand delivery through 5:00 p.m. on June 9, 2020 and by mail through June 16, 2020. Any receptacle used for hand delivery of absentee ballots in such election shall be closed and removed at 5 p.m. on June 9, 2020; The ballots therein shall remain unopened pending delivery of mailed ballots, and all ballots will be counted after 5 p.m. on June 16, 2020.
We have arranged for secure curbside ballot drop off on Monday, June 8 from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, June 9 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Voters may drive up to the main entrance of the Mary E. Dardess Elementary School, 50 Woodbridge Avenue in Chatham, and deposit their ballots in the lockbox provided. The lockbox will be attended throughout the drop-off period to ensure all votes are secure.
Absentee ballots were mailed to all qualified voters in the Chatham Central School District June 1. The late mailing date was the result of a massive backlog at the vendor that printed and processed the ballots. Governor Cuomo, by Executive Order, is requiring all school districts to conduct their annual budget vote and Board of Education elections by absentee ballot only, due to the COVID-19 crisis. Absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on June 9, 2020 if delivered in person or by June 16, 2020 by mail in order to be counted. Counting of all ballots will begin after 5:00 p.m. on June 16.
We realize filling out an absentee ballot is probably new for many of our residents. Please know that State law requires the ballot to be placed in its accompanying oath envelope, which must be signed for the vote to be counted. Please also make sure your name and address is printed legibly on the return envelope.
