End of School Year Grading and Reporting

(May 14, 2020)

Dear CCSD Families,

I hope this letter finds you well. Our transition to remote learning is one of the greatest challenges our District has ever faced, but I am proud of the fact that Chatham’s educators have worked conscientiously as a team to strengthen the learning experience for our students and provide them with reasonable expectations. In recognition that our entire final marking period will occur during this time of remote learning, our schools have adopted the following grading practices for the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

Mary E. Dardess Elementary School

For students in grades K-5, no letter or number grades will be given. A student’s report card for the third and final trimester will be a simple narrative reviewing the concepts the student has been learning, as well as overall comments from the teacher concerning the entire school year.

3rd Trimester Report Cards are tentatively scheduled to be released on June 26 through the Parent Portal.

Chatham Middle School & Chatham High School

Students in grades 6-12 will be given a grade of Complete (student submitted work that was assigned and demonstrated satisfactory effort and engagement) or Incomplete (student did not complete work that was assigned or demonstrate satisfactory effort and engagement). For both full-year and partial-year courses, there will be no formal final exams.

4th Quarter Progress Reports will be released through the Parent Portal on May 22.

Teachers will provide one of the following comments:

  • Student is fully engaged in Remote Learning

  • Student is moderately engaged in Remote Learning

  • Student is minimally engaged in Remote Learning

  • Student is not engaged in Remote Learning

4th Quarter Report Cards are tentatively scheduled to be released on June 26 through the Parent Portal. Course grades will either be a Complete or Incomplete (C/I) along with one of the comments listed above.

University in the High School Courses (College in High School/Dual-Credit Courses) – Final grades for all UHS students will be reported to the associated college or university following the guidelines set by each institution and the grades will be reported on the student’s CHS transcript. This includes both full-year and semester courses.

We have made these grading and reporting changes with fairness to our students in mind. Thank you for your continued support of our students’ learning at home and for your efforts to help make the 2019-20 school year the most it can be. For questions about grading, please contact your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sal DeAngelo

Superintendent of Schools
