(May 1, 2020)
Governor Cuomo announced that all school districts in New York State are closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. This means Chatham schools will continue with our distance learning, child care for essential workers, and food distribution for the rest of this school year. I know this news brings about new questions and we will continue to provide updates as additional guidance from state and local agencies becomes available.
While the Governor’s decision is a necessary measure that comes as no surprise, it still saddens our entire educational team, as we know what it means to our students, families and community, and that it impacts our cherished traditions, activities, and rights of passage that usually mark the end of the school year in Chatham. Events we were holding out hope on, such as our Arbor Day Banquet in honor of our senior class and our popular Music In The Park concert, will need to be canceled and we are currently exploring possible alternative options for graduation.
Our buildings may be closed, but we remain committed to making this school year as rewarding as possible for our students. In the coming days, our District will be finalizing our grading requirements for the fourth quarter and exploring new and different ways to inspire students and honor their accomplishments.
I would like to again thank the Chatham Central School District community for your tremendous support and understanding as we navigate this crisis together.
Everyone, Every Day,
Dr. Sal DeAngelo
Superintendent of Schools
