Dear Chatham CSD Families,
I would like to remind everyone of the importance of exercising good judgement when walking to and from school. Students should NEVER use the train tracks as a walkway to campus. The railway sees trains come through at all times of the day and is posted private property, which means anyone walking along the tracks is not only putting themselves in danger, they are trespassing! As you know, trains take a long time to stop and cannot steer to avoid people on or near the tracks, so please stay safe by staying clear! Cross the tracks only at guarded roadway intersections, which have lights and gates to warn of oncoming trains.
Please DO use the sidewalks leading to campus, cross in crosswalks, and most importantly, be aware of your surroundings. Looking elsewhere (such as at a phone) or wearing earbuds/headphones robs you of the ability to see, hear and avoid potential dangers such as traffic.
The safety and well-being of our students is a priority at Chatham Central Schools. We will be discussing safe walking habits with students here at school – parents, please help us reinforce this message by reminding your children to WALK SMART, WALK SAFE.
