The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named Chatham High School senior Heather Damia a semifinalist in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. This honor recognizes Heather for the exceptional academic promise she demonstrated with her outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) last October. Out of over 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT in 2018, Heather is among 16,000 semifinalists who represent the highest scorers from each state! She is now in the running for one of some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships to be awarded next spring.
To advance to the finalist level, Heather must fulfil several requirements including submitting a personal essay and scholarship application documenting her academic record, leadership roles, honors and awards, and participation in school and community activities. Her accolades include being an AP Scholar with Honors, an honor-roll student, and a NYS All-state soprano. She currently serves as president of her school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society and Fall Festival of Shakespeare club, and as treasurer of National Honor Society. Along with being active in school and community theatre programs, she regularly volunteers as a peer tutor.
Merit Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Finalists will be announced in February and scholarship recipients will be announced in the spring. Good luck Heather!
