Letter Concerning MED Music Room Closure

October 3, 2019

Dear MED Parent/Guardian,

I wanted to inform you that what appears to be some loose vermiculite was found in the Elementary School’s music room this morning. Out of an abundance of caution, we have closed off the music room for an undetermined amount of time to allow the room to be inspected and have the issue addressed. This will not affect instruction, as during this time, music classes will continue in a different classroom.

You may remember from our past letters concerning vermiculite in the building that vermiculite can potentially contain asbestos. The music room is in the area of the building that recently underwent a vermiculite abatement project. While that abatement project detected no asbestos, NYS Department of Health guidelines require all vermiculite to be treated as an asbestos-containing material. Therefore, our District will continue to follow all safety procedures that relate to asbestos, which include sealing off the room and bringing in licensed asbestos abatement and environmental contractors to conduct the inspection, air quality testing, and remediation. We will keep you informed as to the results. As always, the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff is our priority.

If you have any question, please feel free to contact my office.
