Thanks to a generous grant from the Chatham Education Foundation of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, Chatham High School choral students were able to participate in two master classes with Laura Kay, a contemporary American opera singer and educator based out of New York City. In their time together, students focused on preparing their audition pieces for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Solo and Small Ensemble Festival, all while consistently laughing and visualizing a myriad of emotions. Ms. Kay provided advice regarding breath support, interpretation and much more while the students worked on pieces ranging from level-4 American spirituals to All-state-level operatic arias (challenging stuff). At the NYSSMA festival, which took place this past weekend at Taconic Hills High School, the students performed well across the board, including junior Heather Damia, who received a perfect score on her All-state solo! Heather will find out in August if her hard work has earned her a spot in the elite All-state Ensemble which meets and performs in December.
