Chatham orchestra teacher Kate Jarrard spent her February break in Africa as part of mutual educational exchange between NY and Ugandan educators, organized locally through a partnership between the Greater Capital Region Teacher Center and The Giving Circle. Ms. Jarrard and four other teachers from the greater Albany and Long Island areas, along with a team from Uganda, hosted an intensive three day conference in Jinja, Uganda for over 80 Ugandan school leaders. The conference goal was to help improve current teaching practices and student learning there, with a long-term goal of creating a university-level teacher training center in Uganda. While there, Ms. Jarrard made a point to spread a little of Chatham’s E2 spirit around as well! Prior to the conference, Ugandan administrators visited several schools in the capital region. “Of course, this experience impacts what and how I teach, too, and I really hope this expands into some neat opportunities for some of our own students,” Ms. Jarrard remarked.
