Letter from the Superintendent Concerning MED Gym Closure

Dear CCSD families,

I am writing to inform you that a small amount of loose material, that today was identified by an independent laboratory to be vermiculite, was discovered on the floor of an office located within the Mary E. Dardess Elementary School gymnasium. Vermiculite was commonly used for insulation in older buildings. Vermiculite has the potential to contain asbestos and the NYS Department of Health guidelines call for all vermiculite to be treated as an asbestos-containing material. As a precaution, the MED gym is closed to all users while our District’s buildings and grounds department, Questar III health and safety officers, and an independent environmental company conduct testing, including air quality sampling of the gym and adjacent areas. We will keep you informed as to the results of that testing and any steps that may need to be taken to address the issue.

If you have any questions please contact my office.

Sincerely,

Salvatore DeAngelo, Ed.D., MBA
Superintendent of Schools
