Dear Chatham families,
As you may be aware, Chatham School District as well as other schools nationally have seen an increase in students using vaping instruments. Vape pens, E-cigarettes, or JUULS are electronic devices that emit vapor that is inhaled by the user.
The inhaled vapor may contain nicotine, THC (a chemical found in marijuana), and other substances. The liquids that are vaporized can come in different flavors such as bubble gum, mint, and cotton candy.
Many of these devices come in different shapes and sizes: some look like pens, and one of the newest trends, “JUULing,” is discreet and closely resembles a thumb drive.
We are taking the vaping trend very seriously. Any student found vaping or in possession of these devices are in violation of our Code of Conduct and our Athletic Code on Conduct. We also know that this is a new trend and many parents are not familiar with the terminology, associated health risks, and or devices. As we continue to see increasing numbers of students using vaping instruments, we would like to encourage you to talk with your kids about the ill effects of using these devices. Please refer to the links below as resources.
We thank you for being a partner in your child’s education. We need to continue to work together as new trends emerge that pose a risk to the health and safety of our students.
