Third Graders Learn About Police Dogs

The third grade enjoyed a demonstration from K9 units with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Troy Police Department. The deputies and officers shared how police dogs are specially trained to use their incredible sense of smell to sniff out bombs and guns or illegal drugs, as well as track suspects or find people who are lost. They also gave the students a demonstration of how their dogs can apprehend dangerous criminals. Students got to see and touch some of their specialized equipment as well, such as a bulletproof vest made specially for dogs and the bite-protective clothing trainers wear when teaching the dogs how to stop criminals. And of course, the students got to meet and pet a real-life police dog, Kira, a bomb-sniffing dog with the Sheriff’s Office.
