Students in PreK–grade 5 enjoyed exploring themes of diversity, acceptance, and cooperation when Opera Saratoga brought their production of The Ugly Duckling to MED. Through live operatic music and classical singing, the cast shared a whimsical retelling of the classic fairy tale, where an odd-looking duckling has trouble fitting in with the other animals on the farm because she looks and sounds different. However, when The Ugly Duckling saves the other ducklings from the Big Bad Wolf, everyone takes notice of her intelligence and bravery and learns to love her for who she is. The cast also took time to explain a little bit about opera, and how operas are plays where the story is sung instead of spoken. Opera Saratoga’s visit to Chatham was sponsored by the MED PTA.
