Letter from MED Principal Reno Concerning Students Hurt in Crash

Dear MED Parent/Guardian,

It is with deep sadness that I inform you that one of our families was involved in a serious car crash yesterday afternoon. A fifth grader and a kindergartner who attend classes at MED were injured and are hospitalized, while a younger relative, who attended the county’s Headstart preschool program hosted in our building, died in the crash. With respect to the family’s privacy, we are not publicly identifying the students by name at this time. I wanted you to be aware of this most unfortunate news so that you may discuss it with your child should you choose to, as the crash was widely reported in the media today and your child may hear about it from others. Also, circumstances may require our staff to talk to students in our building about this, should the need arise. I would like all our families to know that we have assembled a crisis counseling team that is available for any student who may need support. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

On behalf of our school, I offer my deepest sympathies to the family affected by this tragedy and ask you all to keep them in your hearts and minds during this very difficult time. We are all pulling for the survivors’ speedy recovery.

Sincerely,

Kristen Reno
Principal, Mary E. Dardess Elementary School
