Chatham Middle School’s Newbery Award Reading Group celebrated their final meeting of the year with cake and a vote for their favorite book. Between January and April, the group read five Newbery Medal nominated titles and met in the school library once a month to discuss the books as they read them. At their celebration May 1st, the students gave presentations on their favorite book and pitched their nomination for the first ever “CMS Newbery Book Award.” After all the presentations were made and the votes were cast, the winning book was All Rise for the Honorable Perry T. Cooke by Leslie Connor.
The other titles the students read were:
The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Melanie Gideon
The Inquisitor’s Tale by Adam Gidwitz
Pax by Sara Pennypacker
Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk
This pilot program was led by Mrs. Eager, school librarian, and Mrs. Debye-Saxinger, 7th grade English teacher and got fifteen students involved in reading some great new novels.
