Parental Tips for a Safe Prom and Graduation Season
Chatham Central School District’s SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Chapter is partnering with local law enforcement agencies this spring to help ensure a safe prom and graduation season for all students.
The end of the school year is always an exciting time. But parents are reminded that along with the fun of prom and graduation season comes the dangers of underage drinking and all the potential consequences, including motor vehicle crashes, accidents, sexual assault, alcohol poisoning and suicide.
To help ensure a safe spring and summer, Chatham School District’s SADD Chapter, District Attorney Beth G. Cozzolino, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department, the New York State Police, the Chatham Police Department and the Columbia County STOP DWI Program are working together to encourage parents to help prevent the use of alcohol and other drugs among minors.
“We want our fellow peers to stay safe this prom and graduation season. We think it’s important to raise awareness about this issue,” said junior Katherine Behrens, vice president of Chatham’s SADD Chapter.
Here is a list of helpful tips for parents:
- Do not serve or allow alcohol at any party you are hosting.
- Know where your child is attending a party, verify that there will be parental supervision, and ensure it will be alcohol free.
- Make it clear to your child that you DO NOT approve of him/her drinking alcohol.
- The legal drinking age is 21 – no exceptions!
- A minor who consumes alcohol is violating the law and is risking his/her life as well as the lives of others.
- An adult who provides alcohol to minors is subject to arrest.
Please help protect your child’s bright future by providing a safe, alcohol-free season of celebrations for your son or daughter.
