‘Cultivating Knowledge’ at M.E.D.
Third grade students at the Mary E. Dardess Elementary School in Chatham started the 2011-2012 school year learning about plants and seeds. The students learned about the rewards and benefits of cultivating a garden and planting trees. Thanks to the generosity of Callander’s Nursery Garden Center, the students now have their own tree to take care of.
To augment the section on plants, as well as the third grade’s upcoming exploration of Venetian culture (including Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons), third grade teacher Sandy Myers orchestrated the donation of a flowering crabapple tree for the students to plant and study.
On September 23, with the help of buildings and grounds staff, the third graders planted the tree near the learning garden located in the courtyard of their school. There, the students will observe how the tree grows and changes with the seasons during their third grade year, as well as in years to come.
