Tall Tales and Heroes
M.E.D. students met some larger-than-life characters from American folklore when the Columbia County Youth Theatre stopped by to perform their musical review “Tall
Tales and Heroes.” Through song, story and dance, the young performance group introduced students to well-known characters like Davey Crockett, Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunion, as well as lesser known heroes like Molly Pitcher, Alfred Bulltop Stormalong, and Calamity Jane.
The September 15th performance reinforced the theme that anyone can be a hero and encouraged students to further explore stories about folk heroes, both real and from fiction. As part of the production, the M.E.D. library received a set of books about the heroes featured in the performance.
The Columbia County Youth Players is a newly formed youth theatre group comprised of Chatham Middle School and Chatham High School students, as well as New Lebanon CSD and home-schooled students under the direction of Edgar Acevedo and Terri Conte. Their performance was made possible through a grant from the Chatham Education Foundation.
