ACADEMIC CELEBRATION
On December 7th, CMS held a series of "Gratitude Assemblies" that celebrated academic and character achievement at each grade level. Parents and family members were invited to attend the daytime events and show support for the students being recognized. Separate assemblies were held for each grade and celebrated students earning high honors, honors, student of the month awards and special grade-level awards.
The festive assemblies were held in the school auditorium. Following remarks from interim principal Annemarie Barkman, each award winner was called to the stage to accept his or her recognition, followed by a burst of cheers and applause from the students and parents. The format proved popular with parents and students alike.
Each award winner was given a certificate of recognition, and CMS PTSA and Dairy Queen in Ghent teamed up to give each recognized student a coupon good for one free ice cream cone at Dairy Queen.
"I think it's great they (students) are recognized for this kind of thing," said Lisa Sirani, who with her husband David, attended the grade eight assembly to see their daughter Alyssa be recognized. "It keeps them wanting to keep trying and doing well if they know they are supported."
"It's also great for their peers to see that it is ok to do well in school," added Rocky Payne, who was at two of the assemblies to show his support for his nieces Lauryn and Shay Calkins, both of who were honored that day.
This was the first such event at CMS, and similar academic celebration assemblies are planned for each quarter during the 2011-2012 school year.
