Chatham Middle School: Small Fuel Leak
On October 22, 2008, Gordon Fitting(CMS Principal) and Larry Burud (CMS Asst. Principal) sent home a letter to inform parents and guardians of the following incident that occurred at CMS:
On October 20, 2008, at approximately 6:30AM, CMS discovered that a small amount of #2 Fuel Oil had leaked from a broken line on the boiler's burner that is located in the CMS basement. The source of the fuel was quickly turned off and approximately 1-1/2 gallons of fuel that had leaked onto the floor was cleaned up. Shortly after students arrived for school, administrators and staff members noticed a fuel oil odor in several rooms, including the band room and health office. The decision was made to close the Middle School when it was realized that the odor was not dissipating quickly.
The District's environmental, health and safety consultant evaluated the leak and indicated that based on the location and amount involved, the fuel oil did not present a safety or health hazard to students or staff. Air samples will continue to be taken in the affected areas of the building to ensure that all fuel vapors are completely dissipated.
Mr. Fitting and Mr. Burud are extremely grateful to the alert custodian staff and appreciate the understanding of staff members, students, and parents as they work to maintain an appropriate learning environment. They also thanked all for a smooth emergency dismissal.
