It’s not hard to get an A in band.  In fact, we hope that several of you will have an average that’s higher than 100%!  Here’s how we calculate your grades.

There are three main parts: Performance, Conduct and Effort.

Performance is weighted the heaviest (60% of your overall grade) and is made up of Playing Assessments (tests) and completion of Stars (lesson book examples and scales).  There are usually four assessments, and between 10 and 20 stars to complete.  Stars can be played at anytime over the course of the semester, and assessments are scheduled about two weeks in advance.  Assessment dates are always listed ahead of time on your practice sheets.

Conduct is just that!  Be respectful of the rehearsal time and space and of those around you.  Playing in a band, or any musical ensemble, is different than other classes.  In a regular academic class, one student’s performance on a test does not affect anyone in that classroom other than him/herself.  This is not the case in Band.  Everything that every Band student does in class affects everyone else in Band.  Our objective should be to strive to be an asset to the Band as a whole, and never to do anything that would prevent the Band from achieving complete successThis is worth 20% of your grade.

Effort is the work that you do outside of the classroom.  Your grade here is based on signed practice sheets.  These have to be turned in at every lesson.  One hundred minutes of practice in between each lesson is the minimum expectation.  Extra credit is given for extra practicing!  This is 20% of your grade.
