Fifth Grade Moving to M.E.D.
At its January 31st meeting, the Board of Education voted to relocate the fifth grade to the Mary E. Dardess Elementary School, beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. The decision to relocate the fifth grade followed extensive research into both the middle school and elementary school models to determine which model would most benefit the fifth grade instructional program. Chatham Delegation Finishes Strong at 72nd Model Congress
Students stepped into the shoes of senators and representatives at the 72nd Model Congress, a three-day academic competition simulating the activities of the United States’ Legislative Branch. Chatham’s delegation finished strong, passing legislation and bringing home special recognition for teamwork and good sportsmanship.The January event attracted schools from throughout New York and New England and was hosted by the American International College in Springfield, MA.

Boys Indoor Track Team Conference Champs
The boy’s indoor track team won the 2011-2012 Independent Conference Championships, held January 29th at UAlbany. CHS is the only small school competing in that league, and the boy's 134-124 win over conference powerhouse Scotia-Glenville is a major accomplishment. This has been a record breaking season for Chatham, with thirteen new school records set so far. Read more...
Projection Study Predicts Slow Decline in Enrollment
Because the number of students attending Chatham CSD in the future will have an impact on how our schools are configured, the District recently conducted an enrollment projection study. Passport to Venice
From the “banks” of the Grand Canal of Venice, third graders wrote home about the sights and sounds around them. The students were not actually in Italy but on a class trip to the Spencertown Academy, where a large-scale model of the Grand Canal was laid out for them to explore, draw and write about. The trip was the culmination of the third grade's interdisciplinary study of Venetian culture, part of the ArtsVoyage partnership with the Spencertown Academy. Read more...
CHS Students Bring Home Accolades from Regional Juried Show
Seniors Dylan Soares-Kern (C) and Mitchell Linton (R) won First Prize in the 2012 Juried Art Show at Columbia-Greene Community College for their collaboration on a surreal, three-panel mixed-media installation entitled “Three Little Ladies.”
Also taking home acclaim was senior Justin Simmons-Tamez (L), whose pencil drawing “Benevolence” earned him Honorable Mention.

Erin Clark Wins CMS Spelling Bee
Top spellers from grades five through eight competed in the eighth annual CMS spelling bee, held the afternoon of January 10th. After twelve rounds of letter-by-letter action, Eighth grader Erin Clark came out on top, successfully spelling “waiver” to dislodge fellow eighth graders Sadie Kratt, Ana Verma, and seventh grader Tara Shetsky, all of whom tied for second place. As the CMS spelling bee champ, Erin will go on to compete in the Capital Region Spelling Bee held at Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady on February 7th. Read more...
Author Discusses New Book at MED
Local author David Rubel visited MED on December 22 to talk about his recently published holiday-themed children’s book “The Carpenter’s Gift.” As part of the assembly, school staff took turns reading the story while the book’s illustrations were projected onto a screen for the students to see. Later, Mr. Rubel discussed how his experiences volunteering for Habitat for Humanity inspired his book, which tells the tale an impoverished, Depression-era family from upstate New York who travel to NYC to sell trees for the holidays, and wind up with a new house.
