2018-19 Was Music to Chatham’s Ears

Our music department was busy this past school year!

Of considerable note are the incredible performances of Chatham students at this year’s NYSSMA Solo and Small Ensemble festival and NYSSMA Majors festival (which Chatham hosted again this year). Our band program was represented at the festival level with our 5th Grade Band and Grade 7/8 Band both earning Gold and the High School Band earning a Silver. Our chorus program represented with the 6th Grade Choir and Grade 7/8 Choir both receiving Gold. The orchestra program had the 5th Grade Orchestra and Grade 7/8 Orchestra earn Silver, and the High School Orchestra earned Gold. These awards led to some pretty great celebratory events sponsored by the Fine Arts Booster Club, as well as a new hair color for Mrs. McShane and a funky new ‘do for Mr. Eiser (as promised if their students performed well at the festivals), courtesy of the band officers.

The year saw evening activities every month from November through June including twelve concerts, three All-county festivals and one Cross-county festival, three school musicals, two parades, one recital, one Maypole dance, two opera master classes (thanks to a Chatham Education Foundation Grant), one NYSSMA Majors festival, one NYSSMA Solo and Small Ensemble festival, performances for National Junior Honor Society and the Board of Education, two moving up ceremonies, and one graduation. Other musical events including the Middle School’s Veteran’s Day Celebration, Senior Citizen concerts, and performances at assemblies. Our school also hosted the Yale Spizzwinks, Yale University’s famed underclassmen acapella group.

We are proud of the hard work that everyone puts into our music department every day and can’t wait to share “Project Trio” and other wonderful events with our community next year.
