The Board of Education has appointed Brett Fortran as Mary E. Dardess Elementary School’s new assistant principal. Mr. Fortran comes to Chatham from the Berkshire Junior-Senior High School in Canaan, where he was the associate principal. Fortran replaces outgoing MED assistant principal Richard Sutton, who accepted a position as principal with the Arlington Central School District.
“I love working with kids,” Fortran said on being an educator. “Being a part of their academic, social, and emotional growth is something I find very rewarding. One of the things that attracted me to MED is that this school is part of a tight-knit, welcoming community, something I enjoyed where I grew up and went to school. Bringing a team mentality into an educational setting is something I have always believed brings success into the classroom.”
As assistant principal at MED, his responsibilities include student discipline, curriculum development, supervision of teaching assistants, and staff evaluations. He will also serve as the District’s homeschool coordinator.
Fortran holds NYS certification as a School Building Leader and earned his Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. He also holds a master’s degree in special education from the College of St. Rose and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the State University at Albany. He has twelve years’ experience as an educator, working for the past eight years for Berkshire Junior-Senior High School, where he also served as the Day Program Coordinator and chaired the school’s Committee on Special Education, and earlier, worked as a social studies and special education teacher. Prior to that, he taught special education at St. Colman’s Home in Watervliet.
Fortran grew up in Voorheesville and now lives in Altamont with his wife, their two young daughters, and the family’s German Shepherd. He is a big soccer fan and plays all year round in outdoor and indoor community leagues. He also enjoys snowboarding, traveling abroad, and spending time outside with his family.
Mr. Fortran’s appointment was made official July 10th, 2018. Please be sure to give him a big Chatham welcome when you see him!
