Our differences make us all special, so be sure to celebrate them! This was the uplifting message MED students experienced through story and song when Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical visited our school on February 8th. In this contemporary touring musical put on by Albany’s Park Playhouse, eight-year-old Lily Polkadot faces everything from bullying to segregated water fountains when she moves to a “squares only” town. As the first Polkadot ever at Square School, Lily’s quest to gain acceptance from her four-sided peers looks unlikely until she strikes up a unique friendship with Sky, a shy square boy who is intrigued by Lily’s differences. The story is inspired by the Little Rock 9, the nine African-American students who enrolled at Little Rock Central High School in 1957 after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to desegregate schools.
The Palace Performing Art Center, in cooperation with Albany Medical Center and Berkshire Bank, provided this performing arts learning experience at no cost to our school.
